10. ALTA LANGA AND ALTO MONFERRATO
Alta Langa and Alto Monferrato refer to the southernmost areas near the Ligurian border, where gentle hills give way to wooded mountains. These less touristy regions reward curious travellers with remote, wilder and often forgotten landscapes.
Following the Belbo and Bormida rivers leads you into the Alta Langa: the Belbo River, for example, rises near Ceva in an area of outstanding beauty. One possible route starts in Cortemilia, continues to Bergolo and ends in Saliceto, home to a fine parish church. In Monferrato, you can follow the Borbore Valley from Asti, visiting San Damiano d’Asti and Cisterna d’Asti, or explore the area around Canelli, Nizza Monferrato and Mombaruzzo. Further east, the countryside of the Tortona area, between Novi Ligure, Ovada and Tortona, is also well worth discovering.
