1. VINEYARDS AND WINE AREAS
In 2014, UNESCO declared the wine-growing landscapes of the Langhe, Monferrato and Roero a World Heritage Site. Six specific areas across 29 municipalities were awarded this recognition for their history and for the inseparable bond between people and the land. From here, you can begin discovering a heritage that goes beyond Piedmont and has worldwide significance.
Here are the six areas, each with its own distinctive character. To explore them properly, we recommend slow journeys through the vineyards, with wine tastings and cellar visits. Do not expect one area to look like another: the wines of the Langhe are numerous and diverse, each reflecting rich and layered local traditions.
a) The Barolo Langa (Barolo, Serralunga d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto, La Morra, Monforte d'Alba, Novello, Diano d'Alba), home to perhaps the most famous wine of the Langhe. A visit to Barolo Castle is a must to learn more about it.
b) Grinzane Cavour Castle, in the town of the same name, which also hosts the Regional Wine Shop of Piedmont.
c) The Barbaresco Hills (Barbaresco and Neive), where Nebbiolo grapes are grown and wines such as Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo are produced.
d) Nizza Monferrato and Barbera (Montegrosso, Mombercelli, Agliano, Castelnuovo Calcea, Vinchio, Vaglio Serra, Nizza Monferrato).
e) Canelli and Asti Spumante (Santo Stefano Belbo, Calosso, Canelli). In Canelli, visitors can explore the “underground cathedrals” of the historic sparkling wine cellars.
f) The Monferrato of the Infernot (Cella Monte, Ozzano Monferrato, Sala Monferrato, Rosignano Monferrato, Ottiglio, Olivola, Frassinello Monferrato, Camagna Monferrato, Vignale Monferrato). Infernot are underground rooms carved into sandstone or tuff, traditionally used to store wine bottles at home.
