7. SANCTUARIES AND SACRED MOUNTAINS
The hills of the Langhe and Monferrato are dotted with small churches, monasteries, sanctuaries and sacred mountains. At least three are not to be missed.
In Monferrato, near Casale, the Sacro Monte di Crea consists of a basilica, 23 chapels and 5 hermitages set on a wooded hill. Dating back to the 12th century and later expanded, it features remarkable sculptural groups by Flemish artists.
Further west lies the Abbey of Santa Maria di Vezzolano, a jewel of late Piedmontese Romanesque art, notable for its rare marble jubé (choir screen) with a magnificent bas-relief from 1230.
Near Mondovì, in the province of Cuneo, stands the great Sanctuary of Vicoforte, built between the 16th and 18th centuries and famous for its enormous elliptical dome and vast interior spaces.
