2.     ASTI, CASALE MONFERRATO AND ALBA

It is hard to recommend one city over another, as all three urban centres have much to offer.

The historic centre of Alba, in the Langhe, dates back to the Middle Ages and has a circular layout. It is a pleasure to stroll among its picturesque towers and fortified houses, and then come across its great churches: the Cathedral and, above all, San Domenico, one of the finest Romanesque-Gothic monuments in northern Italy. And of course, you cannot leave without tasting the famous white truffle, for which Alba is renowned.

Asti is also a land of wine and truffles, but its unmissable event is the Palio horse race, held in September. Larger than Alba, it preserves many fascinating monuments, including the Collegiate Church of San Secondo, the impressive brick Cathedral, the medieval Rotonda of San Pietro, and the splendid Palazzo Mazzetti, home to the Civic Museum.

Casale Monferrato enjoys a beautiful setting along the Po River, which skirts the historic centre and offers lovely views. Highlights include the Cathedral, with its unusual structure and remarkable narthex, an interior featuring striped columns and a blue, starry ceiling; the Castle; and the Bistolfi Gypsotheca, showcasing works by the local artist.
